So what goes into a UK Asian Wedding?
The simple answer is, "quite a lot!". So, to help you make the very best of your day, below is a guide to enjoying a great Asian wedding here in the UK:
- Booking the Venue:
First and foremost, decide on your venue and get the place you like booked. Other considerations are usually budget, location and number of guests. It is also useful to read reviews of certain venues and previous people’s testimonials. Catering can also be finalised at this point. It’s important to note that some venues offer catering, or you can arrange catering from an independent company. You must work out what food you would like to have served for your guests, making sure of any dietary needs.
- Choosing Your Dress:
Moving on to the bridal dress. This is the fun part, although it can be stressfu! The venue definitely has an impact on the dress. If it’s a temple wedding, then a traditional dress would almost certainly suit the ambience best. Research the 'look' you want, possible designers and whether you would like to buy a custom-made dress or off the peg. It’s recommended to buy here than abroad as its less hassle and you can have full control over your outfit.
The groom’s outfit is usually bought after the bride’s. The groom’s outfit tends to be similar to the bride’s outfit, for example there may be hints incorporated in to the groom’s outfit - fabric, colour or embroidery. To avoid making this a stressful experience, make sure you have your dress finalised as early as you can.
- Thinking About Your Make-up:
Make-up artists. As mentioned before, go for a makeup artist that is highly recommended and has had good reviews. Definitely have a trial before your big day so that the makeup suits your overall look.
- Choosing Your Wedding Cards:
Nowadays there are so many gorgeous and innovative varieties of wedding cards! If you wish to send some of these wedding cards by post, then make sure that they are not too bulky or impractical to post. Most couples like to have their wedding card provide a 'teaser' of what the wedding day will be like, so set your creative spirits free at this point!
- Choosing a Henna Artist:
Most Asian brides like to have henna on their arms and feet for their big day. There are many different styles you can choose from, such as the swirly Arabic style, or the intricate Indian/Pakistani style.
Do some research on mehndi artists online, and ask others to find out any recommended artists. Most mehndi artists have portfolios of their work, so be sure to see how well they apply henna.
- Ambience:
Music played at a wedding has a huge impact on the overall ambience on the day. A DJ can be hired so that they can play a selection of pre recorded songs, or violin/cello players can play instrumentals of certain songs to create a certain feel to the event. Nowadays, having a musical band is very popular who play live at weddings.
- Choosing Your Ring:
Lastly, but by no means least, is the wedding ring! The ring is the symbol which is worn by the bride and groom for the rest of their married lives. The bride and groom-to-be can choose their rings in advance. There are many different styles, so research and shop around – remember, this is no impulse buy ;)
